May 7, 2016 St. Louis Nostalgia Rendevous

It was with great anticipation that we headed out to the beautiful Gateway Motor Sports Park in Madison, Illionois. This was our first race of the year in what is stacking up to be a very full and exciting season.

We arrived around 2:30 PM and most of the other racers were already there including Bryan and June Huffman, Randy Tavoletii, Bob Mitchel, Jack Kaylor, Mark Cambell, Rob Rothweiler, Rod Urish, Ken Kapper, Bob Brown, & Jesse James.  Rounding our numbers to twelve, we welcomed two new members. Ed Miller driving a nice 55 Chevy and Mark Dulle driving a wheel standing 64 Nova. These two gentlemen are a great addition to our group and very welcome.

We were scheduled to make two test & tune runs Friday evening. Jack Kaylors Rumblin Rambler had a small water issue that was a quick fix and Rod Urish’s beautiful Anglia had a small oil discharge from a pan gasket that was also easily fixed. Anything else that happened in the group were just small adjustments. Thus, the purpose of test & tunes, to get the bugs out of the first runs of the season.

The weather was beautiful when we arrived and a few of us sat in the evening air enjoying each others company.

Saturday morning through noon brought more great weather with a possibility of rain toward evening. The Gassers were scheduled to make two passes. One early afternoon and one late afternoon. We were called to staging about 1:00 PM and were told they wanted to start our group with a flagman. Yup, a “Flagman”. How fun does that sound?  The track had arranged for Jim Lockabee to add more nostalgia to our group with and old style start. Jim was one of the original Flagmen at the old St. Louis drag strip and was a true professional. I think most of our group had never been started with flags. They each had to stage as normal, lighting both staging bulbs and then react from the green flag.  They all did well, enjoyed the change of starting, and not one got to experience the wrath of the” red” flag. It was great to meet Mr. Lockabee and have a chance to chat with him. He has done many things throughout his 84 years including coming in 4th in the state of Nevada for their “Fast Draw” competition.

After our first pass, we put our chefs to work. Mark Cambell grilled brats and hotdogs and Bob Mitchel did his famous grilled veggies. Everyone else brought the rest of the fixins to make for yet another of our fabulous pot lucks.

The sky was offering some pretty dark clouds as we finished so we cleaned up and prepared for the storm. Just before it started to rain, we were told that our last pass had been cancelled. It is amazing how fast the group can load up.  Lots of practice I guess.

It was a great weekend.  Looking forward to the next.

Fall Havana

Time has really flown by, with this being the last race of our 2015 season. We basically missed several of our first races this spring,
due to weather conditions. We had some really great races in the later part of the season. The Fall Nostalgia race at Central Illinois
Dragway in Havana, Ill was our last event of the the year.
On Friday afternoon the Huffmans arrived followed by Ken Kapper and Roger Brown and later in the evening Jesse James. Ken and Bryan
were able to make 3 test passes. Later in the evening Bill Eveland came in and made a couple of passes.

On Saturday the rest of the group started arriving. The group included, Rob Rothweiller, Jack Kaylor , the Blaseys, Rod Urish, Joe and Brendan Beach, Ted Beach and a prospective member Dave Walters.
We made two time runs during the day. The main program started at 6pm. We made two runs during the main program. We made parade
laps past the stands in the evening. Everyone in the stands waved and cheered for us. They made us feel greatly appreciated.
We had our pot luck meal before the evening program. It was Roger Brown’s last race of his career. In attendance was his wife and daughter and grand daughter. We presented him with one of our old banners. Everyone in attendance signed it. We also presented him with a special cake and ice cream. Roger was a good member and we hope to see him at the race track spectating. We are going to miss his humor and his Anglia. The weather was terrific and we all had an exceptional time at this event. We all had great and quick runs to end our season. Later in the evening some of us had a camp fire and sat around and enjoyed the comrade.

We are looking forward to a great season next year.

Cordova World Series — August 28 & 29, 2015

On Thursday morning, the Huffman and Kapper crew came in early to set-up. On Friday, Bill Wamboldt , Jesse James, Steve Rice and Jack Kaylor came in. On Saturday Ted, Joe and Brandon Beach, Bill Eveland, Dale Letterly, Randy Tavolleti, and Joe Kaufman to fill in for the Blasey’s that had a medical emergency. We all had our cars unloaded and on display in the afternoon and handed out many Hero cards and signed autographs, with a lot of picture taking. We were scheduled to run in the evening show. With several rain showers during the day, and then full rain at about 8pm, the track after much work all day at trying to keep the track dry, the program was shut down and we did not make a Friday pass.

On Saturday morning it was light rain, until about mid-morning and then they got the track dried and started running cars. The main show started on schedule and we went out at about 8pm for our first pass. We all had a great run and were cheered on by the crowd with thousands of camera flashes going off. We made a second pass at about 10:30 pm. Once again the crowd cheered us on and we all made some great passes.

We all had a great time with our friends and loved the crowd and enjoyed being a part of such a spectacular event.

Eddyville Raceway Park Fall 2015

Friday was a beautiful day as most of our scheduled 12 car field to pull into the track and took our spot along the staging lanes. Hoffman’s and Huffman’s were the first to arrive, followed by Ken Kapper w/ Ralph and our favorite nostalgia dragster driver Jim. As the afternoon went on Jesse James, Mark Campbell, Robb Rothweiller, Kaufman’s, Jack Kaylor, Steve Bacon and Bob Brown arrived. It was great to see Bob back at the track after the damage done at the Eddyville spring race. Pretty much the first thing he did after pulling Rat Poison out of the trailer was put that wheelie bar on! That evening we paired up and hit the track. Checkout the picture of the 2 Henry J’s. Couldn’t have timed that any better if I’d tried. Bob went straight down the track without setting it on the tailgate and Mike got to try out his line lock for the first time. After our run, many spectators came to the pits to get a closer look at these awesome Gassers.

Saturday Bill Eveland and the Urish’s arrived and so did the crowd. Like Jack Kaylor said, these kids are the future of our sport. Hopefully we are priming a few of them to maintain these wonder pieces of history for the next generations to enjoy too. After our first pass, late in the afternoon Saturday, we got busy preparing our feast. A first, having spaghetti at the track featuring Mark’s homemade meat balls and sauce. Additional offerings of brisket, various sides including grilled garlic bread and of course the desserts were enjoyed. We have the best potlucks of any group I’ve ever been involved in. Thanks everyone.

In spite of threatening weather, spectators filled the stands. Down by two cars, Robb’s ’55 Chevy, and Marks Rambler, we were able to get in two more passes before the rains came. But even the weather can’t dampen the comradery of this group; as we managed to get several chairs in a trailer behind the car and others with umbrellas in hand so we could continue to visit and tell stories well into the night.
Eddyville Raceway Park is a wonderful venue with a great staff. Bryan said they love having us and have invited us back next year for both a spring nostalgia event and the World Fuel Altered Nationals in the fall. Dates TBA

Respectfully submitted,
Mike and Debbie Hoffman
