NOSTALGIA GASSERS ATTEND 6TH ANNUAL MELT DOWN DRAGS

Thursday morning when the rain started my thought was, oh no here we go again, but finally a whole race weekend without rain! Roger Brown was first to arrive Thursday followed by Mike Hoffman, Bill Wamboldt, Gary Blasey, Jessie James and their friend and new member Steve Rice with his 1948 Studebaker. As the day went on, Ken Kapper, Ralph Grote, Mark Campbell, Bill Eveland, Tom Cray, Dean Markuson, Jack Kaylor and Robb Rothweiler’s 55 Chevy finally made it’s maiden voyage. Steve and Ben Bacon brought their cars up later in the evening. We were joined Friday by 2 more new members, Dave Walters with his 1953 Chevy and Glenn McEntire’s Willy’s coupe. Additionally, Ed Roviaro and his 1937 Chevy, Ted and Brandon Beach and Randy Travoletti made a total of a 21 car field. As we went through tech, we saw a familiar face in Ron Norman.

The weather Friday was HOT but several of us took advantage of making time runs. Bryan and June Huffman came up for the day but had to leave before we paired up and made our passes about 4pm. The heat was hard on drivers and cars alike. Glenn McIntire blew up, Walter’s broke his rear axle and Dean put his fan through the radiator. Randy ended up with a flat tire and Ed broke a belt but luckily they were both able to make repairs.

A record spectator crowd was expected Saturday, but it seems the heat and threat of rain kept some people away but not the participants. There were cars from all over the USA and even Canada. It was really nice to see Bob Hajek and Danny Mann, who both say their cars will be here next year. Danny couldn’t keep from helping on the line.

While we were making passes, Gerald Bacon, Steve’s brother, was tending a huge roaster with a whole pig. The tender pork, a variety of side dishes and desserts had everyone who walked by wishing they were with us. Many of the track personnel and Meltdown staff who could, came by for a plate. Gerald has said he would be willing to do it again next year!

History was made Saturday night as the first time Byron Dragway raced under the lights. It really was a cool sight and the fans seemed to love it and so did the cars! In fact, Mike’s Mule made it’s best pass since he’s had it with an 11.34 @ 467 MPH. There may have been a problem with the timing system but he has the slip to prove it…. LOL. Phil and Dee Morris of Gassers Wars magazine brought help to cover the event. Steve Bacon was awarded Best Gasser and his son Ben’s Tub & Squirt won Best Anglia.

By Sunday several racers had pulled out. But with the beautiful day, many of us couldn’t resist making a couple more runs down the track. After all, the next race isn’t until August 22 in Eddyville, IA

Thank you to the the Melt Down Drags and Byron Dragway staff for all the hard work they have put in to make the Melt Down Drags the biggest and, in my opinion, the best event in the country.

Ozark Raceway June 27th

Mike and I were first to arrive Friday afternoon at Ozark Raceway outside Rogersville, MO. A small facility that is working hard to get sponsors, including a local church, and make improvements. Tom and Mike Cray and Bob Mitchell pulled in soon after as well as Ralph, who was helping Jim w/ his dragster for the weekend. Al, the track manager, was there to meet us and let us know how excited he was to have us at their first annual nostalgia drag event.

Friday night, gave us one time run, before a shower and humidity proved to much to get the track dry again. But finally, Saturday was a beautiful day for racing! Mark Cambell, Rod and Tracy Urish and Jack Kaylor, who drove to Ozark after Havanna canceled, gave us a 6 car field.

A brave, local news reporter, w/ camera in hand, enjoyed getting a first hand feel of drag racing when Mike Cray took him down the track in Tom’s beautiful orange Willys coupe.

In all, we made 5 passes and some decided to go for a 6th run before loading up. As always, we had a wonderful meal. Everyone at the track was awesome. Thanks so much for having us.

Cordova Door Wars

June 19th & 20th, 2015 Cordova Door Wars
On Friday , Bryan Huffman, Ken Kapper, Mike Hoffman , Jesse James, Ben Bacon and Steve Bacon arrived. Ben Bacon was first out to make a pass, followed by Huffman and Kapper and then James and Hoffman. We all had a good run and upon returning to the pits, it was discovered that Ben’s engine was hurt and would be out for the rest of the weekend.

On Saturday we had quite a few more come in. Bill Wamboldt, Bill Eveland, Ted Beach, Joe Beach, Dale Letterly, and Gary Blasey. With a total of 12 cars for the event. With scattered showers for most of the day, the program was running a little late. We got called up for a run about 6pm. We all made great passes and the crowed really appreciated us. The announcer gave all of us some good air time for the run. After a couple of
more showers the rest of the event was called. Before the rain and before the event started we had our luncheon with great success. After the good meal, provided by all of our people we made our pass and had a good time for the weekend.

Eddyville, Iowa June 13, 2015

We arrived at the beautiful Eddyville Raceway Park on Friday, mid afternoon. Brian & June Huffman and Ken Kapper & Ralph Grote were already pitted so we just slid in next to them. As the day continued the rest of our group came in steadily, with some not arriving until Saturday.

We were expecting a ten car field to include: Brian & June Huffman, Ken Kapper & Ralph Grote, Dean Markuson, Rod Urish & Tracy, Mike and Debbie Hoffman, Bob Brown, Bill Eveland, Jack Kaylor, Joe & Eleen Kaufman and Jesse & Bertie James.

Unfortunately, Mike and Debbie’s “Blue Mule” didn’t recieve the correct parts in time to make the race but should be up and kicking for the next one.

The weather was spotty with rain. The racers who were there Friday evening were anxious for their test’n tune runs. They got one pass in before the rain shut them down for the night. Bob Brown’s beautiful Willys pickup did and major wheel stand, came down a little too hard and sprung a few parts. He decided to take it and himself home for a little TLC. We hope you are both feeling better.

With 8 cars left, we all waited through the day Saturday for the on and off rain to stop. While we waited we did what we do best – eat and enjoy each others company. The track management spent the day doing their very best to get the track in shape to race. They even came close enough as to call out a schedule. Mother nature just wouldn’t let it happen. Some where around 4:00 PM, the race was called and people started leaving. Those of us who were planning on spending the night, stayed and visited through the evening. Mother nature also gave up and took the rain with her. It was gorgeous the rest of the night. Sometimes you just can’t win. But, that’s dragracing.
