The World Series was an outstanding event with over 500 sportsman racers plus funny cars, fuel dragsters, jets, nostalgia super stockers and of course, the Nostalgia Gassers. The entire facility was full to the max with racers, motor homes, trailers, campers and tents. Everyone was out to enjoy the late summer heat and endless racing long into the night on Friday and Saturday.
The Nostalgia Gassers were well represented by Ron “The Bull” Doran, Bryan “Hollywood” Huffman, Ted Beach, Bill Wamboldt, Ken Kapper, Gary and Brian Blasey, Doug Jent, Randy Tavoletti, Ron Normann and Ken Hansing. A steady stream of racing enthusiasts poured through our pits both days collecting hero cards and autographs, posing for pictures in the gassers and sharing racing stories.
When we weren’t racing or sharing stories with the fans we did what all racers do……eat! We enjoyed a cookout on Friday night before the action began and Saturday we shared a buffet dinner to prepare us for an exciting night of racing. A few racers even snuck in a nap.
While we were not originally on the program for Friday night, we were asked to make two runs as part of their qualification program. The crowd was huge and the press area was overflowing with photographers and videographers, including representatives from Gasser Wars Magazine and ESPN. When we came to the water box the crowd was on their feet and the camera flashes were blinding. The Nostalgia Gassers put on an excellent show with smokin’ burnouts, wheels-up launches and good old fashioned side-by-side drag racing. The Saturday night program was a repeat only to an even larger crowd.
Scott Gardner and his staff at Cordova did an outstanding job the entire weekend. It is always a pleasure to race at one of Scott’s tracks where you can count on a professional, well-run event, great track personnel and appreciative spectators.
